Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia

The Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia is one of the most interesting places of worship in Syracuse. This church is famous above all for having hosted until 2020 one of the most important artistic masterpieces of the Sicilian seventeenth century, the Sepulcher of Santa Lucia by Caravaggio, which then returned to the church for which it was painted, that of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro in the Borgata district.

The church has a history dating back to the 15th century, although the current building was built between 1695 and 1703, after the 1693 earthquake razed the previous building to the ground. The façade represents one of the most interesting baroque views of the city, while the interior, with a single nave, features spectacular altars from the early eighteenth century.
