Fonte Aretusa

Fonte Aretusa is a source of fresh water, a few meters from the sea, which has inspired the imagination of poets and writers since ancient times. To make this place even more special there are the papyrus that grow luxuriantly here, a rarity throughout Europe.
A fresh water spring that contains a particular mythological story. It is said, in fact, that Arethusa was a young nymph, in the service of Diana (goddess of hunting and wild nature) and that one day, while she was near a river in Arcadia, she attracted the attention of the river god Alpheus, who he fell madly in love with her.The girl, however, did not appreciate such attention and, as she ran away, she asked Diana for help who transformed the nymph into a spring of water. Alpheus, despite this, never resigned himself until the gods took pity on him and Jupiter transformed him into an underground watercourse which, even today, feeds the Arethusa spring.
